Children who have sensory processing difficulties will often cry, scream, push, kick, and require their parents to forcefully hold them while the stylist attempts to quickly cut the child’s hair. This is not only an unpleasant experience - it is also unsafe for the child and stylist. Parents describe their child’s response as a disproportionate response and appearing to cause their child pain.
As a pediatric occupational therapist and a licensed cosmetologist, I will assess your child's sensory processing, learning style and functional communication to determine how it impacts your child's acceptance of a haircut. I will create a personalized treatment plan to improve your child's ability to get a haircut safely.
My goal is to help your child learn to have his or her hair cut safely in a salon or barbershop in your community.
Sensory processing and developmental assessment to determine the barriers impacting your child's ability to accept haircuts. A haircut will be completed. An individualized home program will be provided.
Includes 4 sessions to be used within 8 weeks. Each session will focus on providing gradual introduction of sensory input received during haircuts. Your child's home program will be modified to support the goal of transitioning to a salon or barbershop in your community. An initial assessment must be completed prior to beginning a package.
