About Me

Dear Parents,

My name is Stephanie Cassidy and I have been a pediatric occupational therapist for over 10 years. I also have been a licensed cosmetologist for over 14 years. I am certified in the evaluation and treatment of children with sensory processing difficulties (SIPT certification). As my OT career progressed, I became more aware that children who benefited from sensory based strategies, also had a difficult time with haircuts.

Children who have sensory processing difficulties will often cry, scream, push, kick, and require their parents to forcefully hold them while the stylist hastily attempts to cut the child’s hair. Parents describe their child’s response as seeming painful and a disproportionate response. A child’s response can make it unsafe for both stylist and child. Going to get a haircut becomes a dreaded activity for both the parents and child. A child’s sensitivity or difficulty with processing tactile, visual, olfactory, auditory, proprioceptive or vestibular input can make getting a haircut very difficult. Children without difficulty processing sensory input are able to quickly regain a calm state during and after a haircut. Children, especially toddlers, do not always love haircuts; however, crying or whining during a haircut does not make parents think they are torturing their children. I will create a personalized sensory based approach to assist your child in creating an adaptive sensory response to gradually accept all the sensory input received during a haircut. I provide the service in your home in order to optimize on the availability of comfort toys in an environment that is familiar to your child.

My goal is to assist your child in creating an adaptive response through gradual introduction of sensory input, so that he/ she can get his/her hair cut in a salon or barbershop in your community. Assistance in choosing an appropriate salon or barbershop in your community will be provided.

I look forward to working with you and your child. Feel free to e-mail or call me if you have an additional questions. Please contact me via e-mail or call to schedule an appointment.

Sincerely yours,

Stephanie M. Cassidy
